The Underrated Lime: A Complaint
Why do lemons get all the love?
For reasons unnecessary and too long to explain, I woke up this morning with the determination — nay, an urge to make strawberry lemonade.
(Alright, so the reasons may just be the fact that strawberries go off really fast but I still buy them ’cause they’re pretty.
Don’t lie — we all secretly know that strawberries don’t taste that good but they get away with it because of pretty privilege)
I mildly scoured the internet for the recipes. I was bamboozled by the beauty of the deep, syrupy pink colour, in glass jugs only the finest craftspeople — or mass manufacturers — could produce.
But most of the recipes used American measurements (I’m British) and a worrying amount of sugar, so I just decided to wing it.
From what I gathered, I only really needed strawberries, sugar (I used honey), water, and lemon.
Having hulled the strawberries — I know hull sounds a tad violent, but it just means to chop the leaves off — I turned to the fridge.
My quest? Lemons.
But this was a holy grail that was out of my reach. In the vegetable box, we had no lemons…only limes.
